City Hunter 2011 (K-Drama)

Never has a drama affected me so profoundly… It would have been my favourite had I not already had one. But this definitely comes in top second.

City Hunter….A story of an innocent boy who wanted nothing more than to live a normal live…yearning for love from a very young age – the love of a mother, the love of a father. A love, which he is denied time and time again by a surrogate father, whose sole mission is to exact revenge against those who killed his best friend and comrades.

Being the sole survival of the tragic betrayal by the nations’ corrupt leaders, Lee Jin Pyo plots his comeback by training and turning the boy into a human weapon…a tool of vengeance…

(Spoiler alert): If you have not watched this drama yet, do NOT continue reading…

Despite the spoiler alert, I’m sure if you’re a die-hard fan of Korean dramas, you would not be able to resist. So here’s how the story goes…. And unlike most reviews, I’m going to start with the ending first …

Although the storyline is very compelling and exciting throughout from the get-go, it was the ending that ultimately got to me…

Why? Not because it was good. Not because it was bad. If you have read some of the reviews about the ending, you’d know that there were quite a number of reviews commenting about the unsatisfactory ending. Again, perhaps it’s because I had already built a negative impression regarding the ending that I didn’t really hope for much. So, maybe because of that, I felt the ending wasn’t all that bad. Having said that, it does not mean that I liked it. It's just that I felt they could have made it better as it seemed as if the production team had rushed through the ending, which is sad because the gist is there especially with the intriguing twist. Otherwise it would have made the drama almost perfect …

Anyway, what hit me hardest was....the death of a good man…A very likable character who simply didn’t deserve to die a senseless death! Just thinking the injustice of it, was simply heartbreaking especially when there was someone waiting for his return with so much hope… I guess the thought of that hope being dashed is what really made it all the more depressing… I couldn’t stop myself from getting all teary even much later after the drama was over.

Now, going back to the beginning…

The first couple of episodes centre on the treacherous past and how it eventually led to the training of an innocent boy into a highly skilled operative with an agenda to accomplish.

The real story begins with Lee Yun Sung, now an adult, arriving in Korea upon completing his higher education at the MIT in America. Throughout the drama, you can’t help but feel the inner conflict that Lee Yun Sung has to go through. Perhaps because we have watched him grow from a young boy to become the City Hunter, we sympathize with him when he is faced with his inner turmoil.

I must say that Lee Min Ho did justice to Lee Yun Sung a.k.a. the City Hunter character. Lee Min Ho’s lithe, agile and tall form was plus point in the action sequences as it seemed effortless and professional!

The storyline continuously had us on the edge-of-the-seat in almost every single episode except for the last few episodes, which turned out to be profoundly heartbreaking…

Another fact that had it going for the drama was the soundtrack … evocative, thrilling, ideal and simply superb complementary soundtrack for this particular drama.

A must-watch for all K-drama fans!!

Mr Perfect @ Love-Hate Relationship with Romance Novels

"The Perfect Man is pure science fiction!" ~ Jaine Bright in "Mr Perfect" by Linda Howard

The thing about romance n0vels is that it is addictive. A friend of mine once called it trash book, unless of course the romance took place in sci-fi and fantasy realms. Then, it is the by-the-way type of romance and so it's acceptable. Then, I remember what a local celebrity once said: "I don't read romance novels! I want to live it! ". Yeah, well, each to their own, I guess. But I digress...

Coming back to my love-hate relationship with romance novels, as adolescent as it sounds, I do love reading romance novels, probably because it gives a semblance of what love should be and therefore is the basis for my ideals of love (the kind between a man and a woman). The downside of romance novels is that they have the most wonderful Mr Right(s) or at least a definite Mr Maybe.

Well, honestly, no that is not the downside. The downside is when I am back in reality! In reality, no men measures up, not even a mile close to the definite Mr Maybe. Just knowing that the less-than-perfect heroes of the novels do not exist in reality is truly depressing and hopeless.
So, I resigned myself to reading my latest romance flick, aptly titled "Mr Perfect" by Linda Howard. (It was only recently that I started reading Howard's books and they are not bad! Suffice to say, I like her characters. ) This particular book was splendidly humourous, though it was the classic murder-mystery-romance types.

What I would like to mention in particular is the list of attributes for "Mr Perfect" , which was the topic of discussion between the protagonist and her friends, which ultimately takes focal point in the murder mystery.

Here is the list of 10 attributes for the elusive "Mr Perfect" (courtesy of Linda Howard's "Mr Perfect") (in order of importance and my personal comments in violet):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Faithful (Hear, hear!)

2) Nice (Yup, one of those kind-hearted, helpful guys is a definitely ideal)

3) Dependable (Reliable, trustworthy..as the list goes)

4) Steady job (We, women, are after all practical) ;)

5) Sense of humour (what's life without humour, eh??)

6) Financially comfortable (Don't we all want money? Yup, another practical attribute!) ;)

7) Good looking (but not drop-dead gorgeous) - (DDGs would be a problem! So, settling for GL is just about right! haha)

8) GTB (If you hadn't guessed it already - good in bed)(hmmm...*whistling*)

9) 10-inch, though 8-inch is preferred as the balance two-inch would be leftovers (Warning: X-rated: LOL *blush* If you don't know what this is about...I'm not going to explain! *blush*)

10) Half-hour at least (Warning: X-rated!!! Oh gosh, that long!*blush*)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh, but I do want to add another important attribute to that list:

*Intelligent* (hey, don't blame me for wanting my man to be smart!!) This attribute belongs somewhere between numbers 1 & 2 of the above list!
*Sigh* Knowing for a fact that it is all ideal and only happens in fairytales, I can't help but hope for something close to that romance. After all, life is all about hopes, dreams and living it to the fullest. I would like to enjoy these ideals before turning completely cynical.

So, where's my Mr Right?
"Yeah, well, like all the other male chauvinists, he got lost on the way and is too stubborn and egotistical to ask for directions!"

10 Steps to Becoming A Better Writer

Here's something I got from the Copyblogger. If nothing else, you must at least visit this blog for its not only interesting articles but also the humour.

"10 Steps to Becoming A Better Writer by Brian Clark

1. Write.

2. Write more.

3. Write even more.

4. Write even more than that.

5. Write when you don’t want to.

6. Write when you do.

7. Write when you have something to say.

8. Write when you don’t.

9. Write every day.

10. Keep writing.
"

I'll bet if there was an 11th step it would be:
"11. Keep on writing, come what may"...*wink*

Nevertheless, I can not and will not dispute the veracity of the above because it is the only way to becoming a better writer. And it is with much contrition I confess that I have not been practicing the above (if one were to just take my blog as any indication).
